Why referencing your website?
When Internet users want to find websites related to their interests, they generally begin by going on a search engine (like Google, Yahoo, Bing or Qwant). So, they are going to input a succession of keywords related to their research topic and the search engine will send back a list of websites that may correspond at best with these words. This keyword research is called a query, SEO will work on the same keywords. So, it is important for you that your website is well ranked in that list.
If your website is not referenced, it will be less likely to be visited. The website also needs to have understandable, clear and concise URL addresses, not only in order to facilitate the understanding for search engines robots, but also for Internet users who will prefer a page with a URL including determining keywords.
How to reference your website?
Among other things, SEO relies on a website’s PageRank. The PageRank corresponds to the rank search engines’ robots – such as Google – will give to your website, according to its content quality, its pertinence, its age, its respect of SEO criteria… (erreur parenthèse) Consequently, in order to have a good SEO, you have to ensure that your website has a pertinent and quality content, not only thought for robots.
There is the SEO method (Search Engine Optimization), made on the website with the on-page and off-page optimization. This method is free or charged, it depends if you call on professional referrers or not. If not, there is also the keywords paid referencing, especially with the Google AdWords method working with bids on keywords according to clicks.
Other referencing methods
There is another possibility for Internet users: call on a directory (like Yahoo). In this case, like in a classic phone book, websites are classified by themes, and within each theme the addresses are ranked in alphabetical order.
However, nowadays, this method is less used and efficient, it is better to try getting links from other websites: it is called backlinks. They are also a drawback; now, search engines are strict regarding the pertinence and the quality of these backlinks, this is why it can be hard for Internet users to get them.
